I've battled "sciatica" for the last 6-7 years. The term "sciatica" is
a general term and is used to describe a pain, generally running down
the back of the leg. It is caused by some form of trauma to the sciatic
nerve. Your description of how this happened leads me to suspect damage
to a disk, but it could be a variety of things. X-rays don't show
squat for this type of problem. Go see a neurosurgeon, but not just any
neuro. Try to find one that knows and treats athletes and is not knife
happy. Better yet, find one that is a hard core biker. Get an MRI.
Physical therapy helped me but not until I found the right one. It took
me three try's. I've also tried more drugs than you can shake a stick
at. Some help, some are worthless, but it's different for everyone.
Treating trauma to the sciatic nerve is not easy and is very
individualized. It also can take time, so don't get bumbed if things
don't start to get back to normal real fast. Full suspension mountain
and a Softride road bike have really helped me too.
