Hi,
I have dealt with back problems since my car accident and subsequent
FM onslaught--11 years.

First, be patient and work all of your avenues to find what might be
the source of pain. Second, be patient finding relief.
I couldn't even do laundry for the first 2-3 years of FM. Basically,
just sitting too much can kill your back. Even if you have other
quantifiable problems, the subsequent inactivity can throw a huge
monkey wrench into the mix.

I snowboard and play hockey now--but this didn't happen overnight.

I still "care" for my back every day of my life. What helped me begin
to recover was to first learn how to live with back pain--how not to
make it worse; excecizes (walking is KING! walk 5 times a week will
greatly improve back problems), stretching, posture, tools such as
lumbar pillows, triggerpoint therapy, pain medicine (learn about pain
cycles and how to stop them. the old conventional wisdom has it wrong
about medication. The truth is that you need to take medicine early
and not wait until pain is so great that no amout of medicine will
help. Remember--pain begets pain, so stop it early).

Learn about: slipped disks, pinched nerves, myo-facial-pain-syndrom,
and the common FM related pain syndomes. Only you can get you better.
Use doctors to help you. Don't expect them to take the
responsibility, because they wont. These words are "buzz" words.
Throw them out to your doctors to get started.

I have slipped discs, myo facial pain syndrome, sciatica, and FM. I
needed to isolate these problems and recognize each symtom seperately
so I could treat them individually.

I hurt sometimes becaise of a "fibro-flair." Other times my disk
problem acts up because 3 days earlier I lifted something I shouldn't
have.

There are certain solutions I may apply to all sources of pain (like
good posture and rest) and others that are specific to the problem
(ice pack for disc pain, trigger point therapy for myo-facial-pain,
chyropracter for misalighnment, and ultram (pain med) for a real bad
FM flair.)

Good luck and don't hesitate to contact me for more help.

Joe
