My understanding is that x-rays will only show stress fractures late in
the healing process, and that bonescans pick up areas of bone
deposition. Depending on age and site of injury, it may be difficult to
detect a stress fracture if it is in a place where normal bone
deposition is ocurring.
Does it hurt to do a piriformis stretch? Check this site

for a piriformis stretch. I have been having a slight ache in my butt
and when I did this stretch I could certainly feel it - confirming for
me that what I have is a piriformis problem. I am not advocating
stretching the area to aid in healing - it won't help and will probably
cause more harm, just suggesting using the stretch to possibly rule out
a piriformis injury.
I am not qualified to judge whether you should completely drop the idea
of doing the race. You did say it does seem to be getting a bit better,
so maybe a bit more rest is all it needs.
Good Luck, and if you do run please post a report. I am hoping London
is in my future in a couple of years.
