Sorry to hear your story, and glad to hear you're on the mend. I've got
two herniated discs, L3-L4 and L4-L5, the latter of which caused me to
be bedridden for two months then unable to walk without a limp for a
year.
I highly recommend "Treat Your Own Back" by Robin McKenzie, available
through http://www.optp.com for $10 + shipping. It was, more than
anything else, what kept me out of surgery.
And I think your advice about strengthening abs and back is right on! Best of luck to you.
While I'm still new at lifting, I have no plans on ever using a belt
because what I'm after is strengthen those very muscles the belt would
take part of the load from. I understand that they're sometimes useful
with very heavy weights and in competitions, but I'll fall off that
bridge when I come to it
