The McKenzie 7 Step Method

I agree with what the others have said. You've had quite a serious traumatic
injury, so there's no telling whether you'll ever be better. Some injuries
simply cannot be undone. However, the ongoing physical therapy exercises, like
the McKenzie approach, are certainly mainstays of living as well as possible.

I myself have had low back pain, although nothing as horrendous as a
traumatically herniated disc. Running has been a big help to me, but only as a
forefoot runner. I let my Achilles take all the bouncing, compression, and up
and down shocks rather than my knees or back. On balance I believe I am better
off for my running (in forefoot style) in regards to my back pain. But that's
my own personal experience.
