Jim, I had a herniated disk at L5S1, I tried like you physical therapy and what not...No help.
I saw a neurosurgeon and he was well advanced in the techniques of dealing with this.
I had what they now call a disectomy. They put you asleep and go in with very small instuments and
while watching a TV monitor, they relieve the disk and take it out.....That very same day I was home and
sitting in a chair.. Almost instant relief from the numbness and pain in the legs....Only thing with me
was a anestheitic after effects, pucked my guts out...
I had an incision about the size of 2inches and closed with steri strips...
A friend of mine also had it done and she had 5 previous back surgeries the old way called a
laminectomy....Had to be on her back for weeks..
With this new type of surgury, you are not at all limited, only with lifting anything over 10 pounds for
a while...I was up walking and no problem. At all.
My friend was to and had it done at the Cleveland Clinic....
I would recommend you ask your surgeon, since he is a neuro one, which way he is going to do the surgury
for you cause every one is a different case....
Mine was a breeze and I could not believe the difference in the relief......I have degenerative disk
disease so I was worried sick about this.....
Ask again what he will do and good luck with what ever you need done
The surgury I had is called a microendoscopic diskectomy. You may want to check out the web about it.
less invasive and less recuperation time.
Hope I have helped...
