Does anyone have any experience of the TENS machines please?

Does anyone have any experience of the TENS machines please?
I was considering getting myself one some time ago after my GP had sort of
offered me the chance to try one from the surgery. I have never borrowed it
because it always is out on loan and, on the whole, if I take care I can
manage my pain quite successfully most of the time. [Not without rattling
though]
My Mum who is now 75 has suffered with arthritis for about 50 years now.
She started with RA and was hospitalised regularly while I was growing up.
In her case she lost one of her knee joints, quite early on. This was
before the bionic years came along so a new knee was never an option.
Many years later she was taking the American drug that caused all the
problems in the 70s. [Sorry I cannot remember it's name] I had lost contact
with her before that happened but she was told by her Doctor that she hadn't
been expected to live. The outcome is that she will not ever go to the
Doctor's now.
Sometimes she is so bad that I have taken to giving her some of my
prescribed drugs, which she will willingly take. With her "bad" leg being
without it's knee, that leg is shorter, so in turn it worsens her back
pain.
This is where the idea of a Tens machine comes in, but do they work?
I have treated myself to several pieces of bigger machinery over the last
few years and they all seem to have their part to play.
My latest "toy" is an inversion table, I thought that I had made a terrible
and costly mistake at first, the pain seemed worse, but now I swear by it.
Hanging upside down is quite good if you don't overdo it. By far my most
favourite piece of equipment is one of those machines where you stand up and
put a strap round yourself and switch on. It vibrates and the pains just
seem to drift away. It creates some heat and I feel wonderful afterwards.
If anyone can help me with my query it would be wonderful and, if
recommended, would make a lovely Christmas gift for Mum.
I know that there are at least two models, of the TENS, would the portable
one be the best do you think?
Many thanks to anyone who took the time to read this and I hope you all have
a Merry, Painfree Christmas!
