Dr. Sarno's theories and therapy is subject to much disagreement. The
biggest problem is that it is felt that many (most?) of the back pain
suffers have conditions which are not caused by stress.
But for those conditions where are caused by stress (we shall
presuppose this) his therapy seems to be simply that when you feel pain
you are to tell yourself that it is only stress and that this alone will
start healing. Other stress reducers like hypnosis, relaxation, and
biofeedback might be helpful.
I for one, was never exactly clear as to exactly what one is supposed
to do - Dr. Sarno goes into great detail to describe the cause and
nature of back pain but like you, I was a bit confused by the light
coverage as to exactly what actions the patient is supposed to take. I
got the impression it was mostly a state of mind rather than anything in
particular.
Like Lynne, I invite comments from patients who have successfully used
his therapy - perhaps any of these patients can enlighten us on the
steps and actions involved.
