I have a question: I have a friend named Jonathan who has had back pain for years and does not know what is the cause of it. It started when he was in high school, he was running and all of a sudden he felt this shooting pain from his back down to his knees, he said it felt like it was on fire almost. When he saw his doctor, he said that there was a major problem with one of his discs in his lower back, and that he would have to have major surgery to correct it or that he would be paralyzed from the neck down within a few years. It has been about six years, and he is not paralyzed, but his back hurts him a lot sometimes. Once he did go to the emergency room, and told that doctor the story, and ne told him that that was not the problem. He said that it was most likely a pinched nerve; and that if it was somthing serious like a disc out of place that he would've been in the emergency room a long time ago. Also, he found out that his old doctor, who told him it was serious, has since ended his practice due to malpractice suits (false statements of what was wrong with people). Do you have any idea what could be wrong with him, if it's serious (hopefully not), and what he could do to correct the problem and help so it doesn't hurt as much? Thank you.
