I had the same operation 12 weeks ago... it's nothing to be scared of. I had an excellent Neurosurgeon, better than any other since nerve damage to the sciatic nerve was involved. It was a work related injury which occured at the end of August - went through MRI scans, Chiropractor, etc etc! The pain is no where near as bad now - in fact after coming round from the anesthetic I noticed a considerable difference. However, the recoperation time is long - but that does depend on the injury.. mine is not healing as fast as I'd hoped - but I was warned about that. Cycling is good after about 10 weeks - but no steep hills and swimming too.. Walking is the best exercise and also keeping the tummy muscles in shape are sposed to help protect the spine! I'm only 34 and have done the 'it's not fair' bit... but I guess it could be worse. I haven' t worked for 7 months and am about to be made redundant - unsympathetic bosses and all that. But the future starts here even if activities are limited!
