I don't know how long your inquiry has been posted, but I hope you are discovering that some athletics are possible. I had a similar surgery (laminectomy on L4/L5) and eased back, starting with the StairMaster or similar machine in the gym--work up to point that you use it at highest setting--it provides good cardio-vascular. If you can read while you're on the StairMaster, you should have it on a higher setting. Later, run on the treadmill. Stop the second your back tells you something is wrong. Gradually, I found I could run on the road, but never overdo it. I did have to stop playing soccer and squash, but I ski, snowshoe, run, cycle and recommend working out in the gym on the Stairmaster and with weights to get back.
