Re: The piriformis syndrome

After literally suffering for years from horrific "cramps" & spasms in my legs & buttocks & not being able to get a good night's sleep, I couldn't take the pain & kept seeking medical advice. Finally, my orthopedic surgeon diagnosed it as piroformis syndrome, after yearts of bone scans, MRI's, venograms & using dopplar to find the cause of my suffering, generally while I was lying down or sitting. I'd like to add here that my pain radiated down my thigh & into my foot, primarily on ONE side.
My ortho doctor referred me to a chronic pain clinic where I was given the coice between being placed on a morphine drip ( which I refused) a few days a week, or receiving teroid injections directly into the piroformis muscle in my butt cheek. I had to get them for several weeks & couldn't drive for hours after getting the injection. The shots gave me terrific total relief, but I had to discontinue getting them because I had no one to count on as a "deignated driver" on the days I got the injections. That was almost four years ago. sadly enough, the symptoms have returned, but on the other side of my body. I am preparing to go to a different ortho specialist as my former doctor retired. It will be interesting to see what this doctor tells me on March 26, 2002. Has anyone received any different treatment in the past four years?
