Re: Piriformis Syndrome

I've suffered with this excruciating pain for about 10 yrs--finally diagnosed about 3 years ago. I work in the drycleaning industry and my doctor told me that Piriformis is commonly found in athletes like tennis players and golfers who do repetitive movements twisting, which is where the connection comes in on my job. I stand at a press with another machine off to my left and garments to be pressed behind me and am constantly pivoting. also working peddals and kicking switches. I have gone thru physical therapy and learned excercises to help, had ultrasound, and taken muscle relaxants at night, which all help, but the most important thing I do is try to change how I position myself and pivot, try my best to switch the weight on my legs, which isn't always easy to do because of the way my work station is set up, but I do go thru long periods of no problems when I watch these things closely. Unfortunately I usually fall back into the easiest pattern for doing the job and then I pay dearly. Another lady who works with me has the same problem, so we try to share "cures"
The doctor told me people who sit for long periods driving also tend to develop this problem. Hope my input helps someone--good luck, and don't forget to check in to stretching excercises that help alleviate the pain.
Mary
